The Rosacea Skin Condition
Rosacea is a very common inflammatory condition of the skin that results in facial flushing, redness, and pustules. Most commonly, it develops in those between the ages of 30 to 50. Men and women are both affected. Different therapies are available for patients with rosacea. The first step is to avoid the triggers that aggravate vasodilation of the vessels, which leads to the outward appearance of redness. These triggers include alcohol, hot beverages, spicy food and stress.
Wearing sunscreen is essential for patients with rosacea. Topical agents such as metronidazole cream, azelaic acid, and sodium sulfacetamide have been shown to help patients with active rosacea. Long term use of tetracycline, or similar antibiotics, are also commonly used for severe rosacea. However these treatments do not work well for rosacea associated redness and dilated blood vessels for which various different lasers and light sources can be very helpful. Similarly, rosacea associated flushing can often be improve with Botox (R) injections. For more information about our unique approaches to treating rosacea, please call us today at 201-299-4521.
