Although melanoma is one of the least common forms of skin cancer, it is the most serious because the cancer can spread to other parts of your body. You should always check your face and body for any unusual moles or freckles because early detection of melanoma leads to improved outcomes. When checking for melanoma, look for moles or freckles that:
- Have uneven edges and an asymmetrical shape, meaning that it is not the same on both sides
- Are black, brown or other color
The melanoma may appear as a new mole or form as part of an existing mark or mole on your skin.
