What are facial peels?
Facial peels rejuvenate your skin by removing thin layers of damaged skin that cause lines, wrinkles, discoloration and other types of skin problems. After your facial peel, your body generates new skin that is free of abnormalities and flaws.
How is the facial peel procedure performed?
Your board-certified dermatologist may recommend a light, medium or deep facial peel, depending on the type and extent of damage to your skin. A special chemical solution is applied to your skin and allowed to penetrate the layers. The type of chemicals and time for the treatment depends on the level of facial peel. After the chemicals have remained on your skin for a specific amount of time, a neutralizing solution is applied, and your skin is cleansed.
Can facial peels be combined with other treatments?
Your dermatologist may recommend facial peels to be performed in conjunction with other cosmetic dermatology procedures to give you the best possible outcomes. At Skin Laser & Surgery Specialists, we offer a full spectrum of rejuvenating services, including injectables, lasers, and non-surgical body contouring.
The medical glycolic peel
Glycolic acid is an effective treatment for correcting the skin damage caused by aging, sun exposure, scarring and acne. Medical grade glycolic peels use a higher concentration of glycolic acid, typically ranging from 30% to 70%, to address various skin conditions. Your specific regimen is determined during your consultation appointment. Based on your skin type and cosmetic goals, your physician determines the type of medical grade glycolic peel that is needed.
During treatment, the medical grade glycolic peel solution is applied to your skin and remains on your skin for a certain amount of time. This allows the solution to penetrate your skin. You see results after your first treatment, but additional treatments may be needed for best results.
Typically, patients receive three to six treatments every two to three weeks. The medical grade glycolic peel process takes about 15-20 minutes. Although the results are usually not permanent, maintained improvement can be accomplished by periodic re-treatments.
