Peels, Microneedling, PRP… What Works Best?
Peels, microneedling, PRP therapy, microdermabrasion… oh, my! Our experts outline the basics of each of these popular cosmetic procedures to help guide you toward the optimal procedure for your skin type or ailment.
Microneedling
Microneedling is a treatment that triggers collagen production by making tiny punctures in the skin. New collagen production results in thicker, healthier skin. A numbing agent is applied to the skin prior to microneedling, so the procedure is virtually painless. Microneedling is effective for extremely tough skin conditions, even stretch marks. Microneedling can also treat sun damage, wrinkles, scars, hair loss, age spots, large pores, and rosacea. After the treatment, you may experience minor swelling and redness.

Facial Peels
A facial peel is a procedure that removes thin, top layers of damaged skin. After the layers of skin causing lines, wrinkles, and discoloration are removed, your face may create new, “flawless” skin. There are varying intensities of facial peels. Light facial peels are effective for exfoliation, fine lines, dryness, and acne, but deeper peels are required to treat sun damage, pigmentation, wrinkles, and scars. Facial peels take one to two weeks to completely heal.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)
A Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) facial, or “vampire facial,” combats aging using plasma from your own body. Vampire facials are nonsurgical and improve your skin’s tone, color, and texture. A vampire facial uses growth factors in your own blood to help stimulate collagen, keratin, and hyaluronic acid production. These substances are what keep your skin looking youthful. The procedure is performed by drawing blood from your arm. The platelet rich plasma is separated from your blood in a lab and then injected into your face. Anesthesia may be administered prior to the treatment, so no discomfort is felt. The procedure can be combined with lasers. The treatment takes about a week to heal, and the results will last for many years.
