What Is Athlete’s Foot?Athlete's Foot in New York and New Jersey

Athlete’s foot, or tinea pedis, is a rash that develops on your feet.  The condition is caused by a fungus that quickly grows in warm, moist places, making the spaces between your toes a perfect environment.  Athlete’s foot can spread quickly to other parts of your feet and even remains active inside your shoes.  Infection occurs in several areas of your feet, including your heels, between your toes and your toenails.

How Do You Know If You Have Athlete’s Foot?

The symptoms of athlete’s foot depend on the type of infection.  Burning and itching, as well as cracked and peeling skin, are the most recognized indications of athlete’s foot.  You may also notice tenderness, thickened skin and blisters.  If your toenails are affected, they may thicken or crumble, and you could lose your toenails as a result of athlete’s foot.

How Is Athlete’s Foot Treated?

Effective treatment for athlete’s foot begins with a proper diagnosis to determine the cause and extent of your foot condition.  Dr. Goldberg may take skin and toenail samples that are sent to a lab, especially if you have athlete’s foot that has not responded to previous treatment.  At-home treatments may be adequate for some cases of athlete’s foot.  More advanced cases, though, require prescription treatments.  During treatment, you should keep your feet clean and dry, or the fungus may begin to multiply.

How Can I Avoid Athlete’s Foot?

The fungus that causes athlete’s foot thrives in warm, moist environments.  One of the most effective preventative measures is to keep your feet dry and clean, especially the areas between your toes.  Cotton socks and leather shoes allow air to circulate and keep moisture away from the skin of your feet.  Because athlete’s foot spreads easily, you should always wear sandals in public places, such as swimming pools and gym showers.
