What is Psoriasis?
Your skin has a natural life cycle that eliminates old, dead cells and replaces them with fresh, healthy cells. This cycle, though, is disrupted for patients who suffer from psoriasis. As a result, skin cells build up, and the skin takes on a scaly appearance. Psoriasis is a chronic condition that causes occasional skin-related flare ups, so these patients face a life of feeling self-conscious and embarrassed.
What Causes Psoriasis?
Research into psoriasis has not resulted in an exact cause of the condition. What is understood by the medical community is that the immune system plays a role, as well as environmental factors and genetics. A certain type of white blood cell, known as a T cell, seems to trigger the immune system, causing it to become overactive and attack healthy skin. Blood vessels dilate, and white blood cells escape to the outer layers of the skin, creating the plaque, or scaly, thick appearance, on the surface of the skin.
How Do You Know If You Have Psoriasis?
Red patches of skin that are covered in silvery scales may indicate that you have psoriasis. Other signs include skin that is dry, cracked, itchy, burning and tender. Psoriasis may also affect your nails, causing them to be thick and have pits or ridges. Swollen, stiff joints may also be an indication of psoriasis.
How Is Psoriasis Treated?
The goal of treatment for psoriasis is to interrupt the cycle of overactive skin cell development, reduce discomfort and improve the texture of the skin. Dr. Goldberg and his staff may recommend topical, injectable or oral treatment, as well as excimer laser light therapy. Topical treatments are most effective for mild to moderate psoriasis, and more severe cases are typically treated with oral or injectable treatments. Excimer laser therapy may be effective for all levels of psoriasis.
How Can Psoriasis Be Avoided?
Psoriasis itself cannot be avoided, but patients who live with the conditions can take steps to minimize flare-ups. Proper bathing, sunlight and reduced stress are some of the recommendations that Dr. Goldberg may discuss during your consultation appointment.
