What Is A Mole?

Moles, or nevi, are common, and most everyone recognizes a mole when they see one.  But what is a mole exactly?  A mole is simply a small cluster of pigmented cells, and they can be any number of colors on just about any part of your body.

Most moles are simply skin marks that are not cause for concern.  Some moles, though, can develop into skin cancer.  Understanding when your mole needs to be examined by Dr. Goldberg helps ensure that your skin is healthy.

What Causes Moles?

Your skin contains pigment, or melanin, that gives your skin color.  Melanin is produced by special cells known as melanocytes.  While these unique cells typically create a smooth, even skin tone, sometimes they grow in small clusters and create a mole.

Important Information About Moles

So which moles should cause you concern?  There are a few indicators that can help you know when to seek the guidance and expertise of Dr. Goldberg.  Large moles that are present at birth, known as congenital nevi, are more likely to develop into malignant melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.  The other type of mole that can lead to malignant melanoma is an atypical mole, or dysplastic nevi.  These moles have a diameter of 1/4 inch or larger, similar to the diameter of a pencil eraser.  They also have an irregular shape with dark centers and lighter edges.  Lastly, having 20 or more moles or developing a new mole after age 35 may mean that you have a higher risk for developing melanoma.

How Do We Treat Moles?

If you have a mole that may indicate skin cancer, Dr. Goldberg takes a biopsy of the mole.  If skin cancer is not a concern, the mole is removed surgically by either excising or cutting out the mole and healthy tissue around the mole, or by shaving the mole, which means that only the mole is removed.  In some cases, Dr. Goldberg may recommend laser therapy to remove your mole.
