Melasma Treatment in New York and New Jersey
Skin Laser & Surgery Specialists of New York and New Jersey offer melasma treatment to the residents of New York and New Jersey.
Melasma is a very common patchy, brown discoloration that appears on the face. It is usually seen in women in their reproductive years. Melasma most commonly forms on the forehead, cheeks, upper lip and chin. The formation of melasma is triggered by sun exposure, hormone fluctuations, birth control pills, and hormonal changes due to pregnancy. Melasma is primarily seen in women who are pregnant, have daily exposure to the sun and are of Latin or Asian descent.
How is Melasma treated?
The treatment of melasma is more complicated and may require the use of a variety of lasers, laser-like technologies and other treatment approaches including chemical peels and/or medical grade skin care products.
How Do Lasers Remove Unwanted Pigments In The Skin?
Laser therapy is one of the most exciting treatments for removing unwanted pigments like melasma. Lasers work by emitting a specialized light that is passed through the skin and preferentially absorbed by its target, be it an unwanted hair, vein, or in this case, the unwanted pigment in the skin. The laser causes the pigments to break up and disappear, leaving you with smooth, clear skin. There are several lasers available that work remarkably well in treating unwanted pigmentation.
Melasma can be a very difficult problem to treat. Our physicians have over 2 decades worth of experience in treating melasma; many of our patients have sought and failed with other treatments before coming to us. We use a unique combined approach in treating melasma. This approach involves the gentle use of a variety of lasers or light sources in combination with anti-inflammatory LED treatments. These treatments are often combined with very mild glycolic acid and newer bleaching substances such as Lumixyl™ and/or elure™. This combination of treatments plus appropriate sun protection can dramatically improve your melasma.
