Types of Laser Skin Treatments

At Skin Laser & Surgery Specialists, we use lasers to treat a wide variety of conditions, including:

Basics of laser skin resurfacing

Our NYC laser skin resurfacing uses concentrated laser light to remove places on the skin that are damaged or aged. Resurfacing allows the skin to rebuild collagen, a protein that helps the skin retain its firmness and youthful appearance. By using the skin’s own healing qualities, we reveal healthier and younger looking skin.

Our laser resurfacing technique is designed for precision and to deliver accurate treatments. The precision of the lasers does not affect the tissue around the treatment area.

Laser skin resurfacing is typically not painful, and patients do not need much downtime afterward. Patients may experience some swelling and redness at the treatment area after the procedure. However, these symptoms go away quickly. A topical cream is given to treat any discomfort.

In some situations, multiple laser skin resurfacing sessions are necessary to achieve the best results.

Who are the best candidates for laser treatment?

For many people, facial wrinkles appear in localized areas such as around the mouth and near the eyes. Laser skin resurfacing in NJ is a targeted procedure, so the laser focuses on these areas with precision.

Risks of pigmentation changes are heightened for patients with black, olive or brown skin. Our staff will evaluate your skin’s characteristics to determine the best course of action.

Laser resurfacing is not for everyone. People with an active skin infection, keloid-like scarring, or who have taken Accutane in the past 12 to 18 months may not be ideal candidates for the procedure.

While laser resurfacing can improve your appearance and give you more self-confidence, it will not address all your facial flaws. The lines that result from natural facial movements (laughing, chewing, talking, blinking, etc.) will reoccur. Our staff will give you suggestions on how to maintain your treatment results such as limiting sun exposure, using medicated facial creams and light chemical peels. It is important that you discuss your expectations for this procedure with our staff during your consultation.

Getting back to normal after laser skin resurfacing

Depending on which laser procedure you received, your skin will be varying shades of red for a couple weeks. We may prescribe medication to reduce the redness in your skin at a faster rate. Once two weeks have passed, you will be able to apply makeup to help hide the color. The pinkness of the skin can remain for up to six months.

In rare circumstances, some patients may find that their skin is hyper sensitive to makeup during the healing process. In these situations, makeup should not be worn until a less irritating substitute is found, or the skin has healed to the point where a reaction does not occur

In the months after your treatment, take efforts to protect the treated area from the sun until your skin has returned to its normal color. By using sunscreen regularly, you can help maintain the results and limit the chances of new sun damage.

If you spend any time in the sun, use a sunscreen with a minimum SPF 15 rating. You should also use a hat or visor to shield your face. If the eyes were the focus of your restructuring, wear sunglasses with UVA and UVB 100 filters.

Laser skin resurfacing: your new look

It could take a several months to see the full results of your resurfacing. When the skin returns to its normal color, you will see a tremendous improvement. You will see a fresher, smoother appearance.

While the results of your resurfacing treatment will last a long time, they are not permanent. Your new skin is capable of being affected by the aging process. In the years following your laser treatment, the natural movements of your face will cause new lines to form.

Like most types of skin rejuvenation treatments, laser resurfacing can be repeated. However, following a skin care regimen suggested by our staff and protecting your skin from the sun can help your results last longer.

What is the cost of laser skin treatments?

Because our NYC laser skin resurfacing treatment is different for every patient, your first step is a thorough consultation with one of our board-certified dermatologists. Once the two of you reach an understanding regarding cosmetic goals and the recommended regimen, our office can provide you a quote for treatment. We also accept CareCredit® and Alphaeon™ Credit to help you get the care you deserve.
