What is Hair Loss?

Hair Loss (Alopecia) in New York and New Jersey

The most recognized type of hair loss is related to baldness, receding hair lines and thinning hair.  Hair loss, or alopecia, also describes hair loss on other parts of your body.  The most extreme case of hair loss is a condition known as alopecia universalis, in which the patient has no body hair at all.  A more common condition is male pattern baldness, but women suffer from thinning hair and balding, known as “female-pattern baldness.”  Many women live with this condition in silence.

What Causes Hair Loss?

Genetics do play a role in hair loss, but there are several other factors that can cause you to lose hair.  Certain medications and medical conditions cause you to lose hair, as due poor nutrition and illicit drug use.  Medical conditions include lupus, lichen planus, hypothyroidism and alopecia areata, where the immune system attacks the hair follicles.  Women may lose their hair due to hormonal changes, pregnancy, childbirth, birth control and menopause.  Scalp infections, scarring and injury may also result in hair loss.

How Is Hair Loss Treated?

Wigs, toupees and “comb overs” aren’t the only way to treat your hair loss.  Today, there are topical and oral treatments; as well laser procedures that can help prevent further hair loss.

We use the exciting NeoGraft™ method.  This method employs the use of follicular unit extraction (FUE). There is less downtime and scarring involved with FUE than the older technique known as follicular unit transplantation (FUT).

Minoxidil, also known as Rogaine, is a safe and effective topical treatment for both men and women.  The treatment is designed to slow hair loss, and some patients experience new growth while using the product.  Finasteride is an oral medication is safe for men, but women who are in their childbearing years should avoid this treatment.  Dr. Goldberg may also recommend laser treatments to stimulate new hair growth.
