What Is Eczema?

Eczema, or atopic dermatitis, is a chronic skin condition that typically appears on the arms and behind the knees.  The condition, though, may appear on other parts of your body.  Most patients experience occasional flare-ups of their eczema, and these episodes can be caused by environmental irritants, stress and other factors.

What Causes Eczema?

While the exact cause of eczema is unknown, we do know that there is a connection between having dry skin and certain immune deficiencies.

How Do You Know If You Have Eczema?

Eczema most commonly occurs on the hands, feet, elbow, behind the knees, ankles, wrists, face, neck and upper torso.  You may notice small, red bumps on your skin that ooze and crust.  You may also have patches of skin that are red or brownish-grey.  Other signs of eczema are severe itching, especially at night; skin that is thick, cracked or scaly and skin that is raw and sensitive.

Your eyes can also be affected by eczema.  Your eyelids may itch, and scratching can worsen the symptoms by causing swelling and redness.

How Is Eczema Treated?

The goal of your treatment for eczema is to control the symptoms that cause you discomfort and embarrassment by reducing inflammation and itching.  Treatment also aims to prevent future flare-ups of your eczema.  Some of the most common treatments for eczema are corticosteroids, antibiotics, antihistamines and light therapy.  Treatments may be topical, oral or injectable.
