What are keloid scars?

Keloids are a type of painful and/or itchy scar tissue that may form over a wound from an injury or surgical procedure. They can also form due to a piercing, acne, chickenpox and even a scratch.

Keloid scars are common among people with dark skin types. These growths are a result of an injury, such as a cut or burn. As the area heals, a raised scar develops that is larger than the original injury site. The exact cause for keloids is not known, but the medical community believes that abnormalities in collagen production are to blame for these growths.

What are the best options for keloid removal?

NYC keloid removal can be tricky because there is a risk of a new keloid developing in the treatment area. Lasers have been proven effective for addressing some of the issues associated with keloids, including redness, thickening of the skin and discomfort.

Superficial Radiation Therapy (SRT) after keloid excision has proven to have the highest cure rate of any available treatment modality. This treatment is only available in select treatment centers throughout the country. Skin Laser & Surgery Specialists is a recognized international center for the performance of SRT treatment of keloids. Call one of our offices in NYC or NJ to learn more.

How does SRT treatment work?

Superficial radiation therapy, or SRT, is a non-surgical treatment for keloid scars. SRT treatment involves low-energy radiotherapy in which superficial X-rays pinpoint and concentrate the radiation dose only within the depth of the affected area. The procedure ensures that only the targeted lesion is treated, and the surrounding and underlying healthy tissue is not touched. SRT leaves little-to-no scarring and lessens the chance for recurrence.

What does the skin look like after keloid treatment?

The appearance of the skin after keloid treatment varies by individual patient. Many factors, such as skin type, severity of the keloid, and amount of correction affect how your skin will look after keloid treatment.

How many sessions are required?

For most patients, between one and five SRT sessions are needed for keloid removal in NJ. Your board-certified dermatologist will discuss your individual keloid treatment plan during your consultation appointment.

How long do the results last?

SRT treatment for keloids gives you long-lasting results. However, certain choices or circumstances, such as sun exposure and ethnicity, may place you at greater risk for re- developing keloids. Dr. Goldberg provides you with post-treatment instructions to give you the longest possible results.
