Skin Cancer Awareness Month – Tips for Self-Screening
Did you know that skin cancer is the most widely diagnosed cancer in the United States? Fortunately, it is also one of the most preventable and easily detectable. Although a dermatologist is among the best to diagnose skin cancer, you can and should know the most common signs, so that you can regularly self-screen. In general, it is recommended that individuals do a full-body exam, in front of a mirror, every month. Here is what to look for to prevent three of the most common types of skin cancer:
For Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC)
The most common type of skin cancer, BCC is typically found on areas of the body with the most sun exposure. Keep an eye out for:
● A patch of reddish, dry skin that refuses to heal
● A lump that is flesh-colored and pearl-shaped
● A pimple that won’t go away
● A sore that continues to bleed, heal and return
● A waxy-feeling scar
● A slowly growing cluster of shiny pink or red growths
● A growth that is flat or sunken
For Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC)
In addition to appearing on places that receive sun exposure, SCC can also appear on the inside of the mouth, the lips, or areas of the body that have been badly burned or suffered chemical exposure. Check your body for:
● A reddish bump, patch or pearl-shaped growth that is hard, scaly or crusty
● An open sore that itches, bleeds, heals and returns
● A scaly area of the lips
For Melanoma
Although melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer, it can be successfully treated if it is caught early. This is why it is especially important to watch out for:
● A mole that grows, changes shape or changes color
● A mole that has a scaly appearance, oozes or bleeds
● A new, quickly growing dark spot on the skin that looks like a mole
● A new spot on the skin that is painful, itchy or bleeding
● A brown or black streak beneath fingernails or toenails
● A bruise on the foot that refuses to heal
Although skin cancer can be an overwhelming diagnosis, it is far better to catch the cancer early, so that your treatment has the best chances for success.
