Pay Attention to Your Moles
All of us have markings on our skin and spots that are unique to our own body. While many of these marks are normal and healthy, there are some that are signs of problems with the skin. The key is to regularly pay attention to the moles on your body and to know the signs of potential trouble. The foundation of skin health begins with a focus on the appearance and size of your moles. Skin cancer continues to be one of the most prevalent yet preventable forms of cancer.
Regular Self-Examinations
Regular self-examinations are one of the most important steps you can take in the detection of skin cancer. Use a mirror to scan your body during a self-examination or ask for help to examine areas that are not visible to you. Since sun exposure has such an effect on skin health, it is essential to give special focus to the parts of the body that get the most sun such as the face, back, neck, arms, ears, legs, and hands. Since most melanomas form on visible skin areas, patients are often the first detectors of cancer. Identification and early diagnosis are critical in the fight against skin cancer. When caught early enough, most melanomas are curable.
The ABCDEs of Melanoma
Use the ABCDEs of melanoma to be informed in your self-examinations. If any of these warning signs are present, seek evaluation by a dermatologist.
- Asymmetry– One half of the mole is different from the other.
- Border– The edges of the mole are uneven, scalloped, and hard to define.
- Color– The color of the mole is uneven throughout.
- Diameter– The diameter of the mole is larger than 6mm, or the eraser of a pencil.
- Evolution- The mole has changes in size, shape or color.
Schedule an Appointment with Your Dermatologist
Besides regular yearly check-ups, it is necessary that you make an immediate appointment if you notice any changes in your moles. Remember that early detection and diagnosis is key to skin cancer prevention.
