Is Pale the New Tan?
Is Pale the New Tan?
More and more Hollywood’s leading ladies are proving to us that being pale is beautiful. Stars like Taylor Swift, Scarlet Johannson, and Katy Perry are all embracing their natural glow. With increased awareness of the harmful effects of the sun’s rays, it is no surprise than many are opting out of tanning bed sessions.
Protecting our skin from the sun decreases our risk of developing skin cancer and maintains our youthful appearance. The sun destroys collagen in our skin which in turn leads to increased sagging and wrinkles. As we age, collagen is naturally depleted but if we are “sun worshippers” this process is intensified.
Let’s take Bill McElligott (pictured left), a truck driver, who shows significant sun damage in the side of his face exposed directly to sunlight. Car windows do not protect us from UV rays. Therefore, the notion of wearing sunscreen only when we are out in the sun is erroneous. The sun is always out and exposure for short periods can still run a risk of skin damage.
So… Remember to:
- Wear sunscreen and reapply every 2 hours!
- Avoid tanning beds
- Visit your dermatologist for an annual screening because early detection is the best cure for skin cancer!
