How to Properly Apply Sunscreen
Wearing sunscreen is one of the most reliable ways to protect your skin from damage, skin cancer, and premature aging. It is not enough to just apply it; it must be worn correctly to ensure you are getting maximum protection from the sun’s powerful UV radiation. Refer to the tips below to learn some of the key techniques to properly applying sunscreen.
Always use a broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher – Sunscreen Protection Factor, SPF, measures how effectively a sunscreen will defend the skin from damaging UVB rays. A sunscreen with SPF 30 will block approximately 97% of the UVB rays to ensure you are getting the coverage you need. Using a broad spectrum sunscreen will protect from both UVB and UVA rays.
Use the proper amount – Dermatologists recommend using 1 ounce, enough to fill a shot glass. Most adults do not use enough sunscreen, so it is crucial that you are using the adequate amount to get protection. A good rule to adopt is to use enough to fit into the palm of your hand.
Apply sunscreen before sun exposure – Do not wait until you are in the sun to put on your sunscreen. Get in the habit of applying sunscreen approximately 15 minutes before sun exposure. The skin needs time to absorb the lotion to ensure there is proper coverage.
Evenly apply sunscreen to all exposed areas – Do not neglect to apply sunscreen to easy-to-miss and hard-to-reach areas. Spots like the ears, neck, and tops of the feet are very easy to miss and susceptible to burns.
Reapply throughout the day – Sunscreen needs to be reapplied at least every two hours throughout the day to maintain effectiveness. Apply the same amount every two hours as a general rule. If you go in the water, sweat, or towel off, then sunscreen should be immediately reapplied.
