One in Five Americans Will Develop Skin Cancer in the Course of a Lifetime

Skin cancer is the most widely diagnosed cancer in the United States. It is one of the most preventable and one of the most easily detectable as well. All Americans should know the most common warning signs in order to catch and treat cancer as quickly as possible. Only your physician will be able to diagnose skin cancer, but if you have any of the following signs or symptoms, please contact SLSS immediately for an accurate diagnosis.

Skin Laser & Surgery Specialists of New York proudly offer the following skin cancer treatments:

Basal Cell Carcinoma Signs and Symptoms

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common type of skin cancer. It usually appears on areas of the body with the most sun exposure like the face, neck, and hands. Its most common signs are:

  • A reddish patch of dry skin that won’t heal
  • A flesh-colored, pearl-shaped lump
  • A pimple that just won’t clear
  • A sore that bleeds, heals, and then returns
  • A scar that feels waxy
  • A group of slow-growing, shiny pink or red growths
  • A flat or sunken growth

Basal Cell Carcinoma Treatment

Several factors affect the basal cell carcinoma treatment that Dr. Goldberg may recommend for you.  Electrodesiccation and curettage, also known as ED&C, is a procedure that removes the surface of the skin followed by burning the base of the basal cell carcinoma with an electric needle.  Surgical options include surgical excision to remove the cancerous tissue and Mohs surgery to “shave off” thin layers of skin until all abnormal cells are removed.  Other treatments include freezing, topical treatments and medications, although medications are typically recommended only for more advanced cases.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC)

SCC also appears on areas of the body that are often exposed to the sun, but it can also appear in less obvious places such as inside the mouth or on the lips. It can also occur on areas of the body that have been badly burned or exposed to chemicals. Common signs include:

  • A hard (scaly or crusty) reddish bump, patch, or pearl-shaped growth
  • An open sore that itches and bleeds; it can heal and return
  • A scaly patch on the lip

Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) Treatment

Squamous cell carcinoma can be treated surgically, with topical medications or with laser therapy.  Surgical options include electrodesiccation and curettage, surgical excision and Mohs surgery.  Laser therapy and photodynamic therapy may be recommended, as well as radiation therapy for more advanced cases.

Melanoma

Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer, but can be treated successfully if caught early. Common signs and symptoms include:

  • A mole on the skin that is growing, changing shape, or changing color
  • A mole that looks scaly, oozes, or bleeds
  • A new dark spot on the skin that looks like a mole, but grows quickly
  • Pain, itching or bleeding in a new spot on the skin
  • A brown or black streak underneath a fingernail or toenail
  • A bruise on the foot that does not heal

Melanoma Treatment

Early detection of melanoma greater affects your treatment options.  In these cases, the cancerous cells are typically removed with surgical excision to remove the cancerous growth from the skin.  For cases that are in the later stages, Dr. Goldberg may recommend surgery of the lymph nodes, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, biological therapy and targeted therapy.

SRT Treatment for Skin Cancer

SRT Treatment (Superficial Radiation Therapy) is effective for skin cancers on the arms, legs back and torso, and especially beneficial to skin cancers on the head and neck. During SRT Treatment, radiotherapy energy is concentrated on the treatment area with a specially designed cone-shaped instrument. Energy is applied to the area for approximately 90 seconds.
