Lichen Planus Treatment in New York and New Jersey

Skin Laser & Surgery Specialists of New York and New Jersey offer treatment for lichen planus to the residents of New York and New Jersey.

What Is Lichen Planus?

Lichen planus is a condition that occurs when your immune system attacks your skin or mucous membranes, including the mouth, vulva, vagina and other areas that are covered with mucous membranes.  Lichen planus can affect everyone but is most common among adults in their mid-30s and mid-40s.  Left untreated, lichen planus can lead to scarring, increased risk for skin cancer, and if the genitals are affected, sexual dysfunction.

What Causes Lichen Planus?

While the exact cause of lichen planus is not known, the medical community does believe that certain medical conditions, as well as environmental contaminants, place you at higher risk for the condition.  Some over-the-counter medications, as well as prescription medications for heart disease, high blood pressure and arthritis, have been connected to cases of lichen planus.  Certain immunizations, such as hepatitis B and flu, as well as hepatitis C infection, may also place you at greater risk for developing lichen planus.

How Do We Treat Lichen Planus?

Lichen planus appears on the skin as flat, purplish bumps that may itch and blister.  You may also notice hair loss and discoloration if lichen planus affects your scalp.  Your fingernails and toenails can also be affected, and the condition may cause nail loss or damage.  When mucous membranes are affected by lichen planus, white spots or patches appear inside your cheeks or on your lips, gums or tongue.  You may also develop ulcers if lichen planus affects your vaginal area or mouth.

Treatment for lichen planus helps reduce inflammation and enhances the healing process.  Treatment options include topical, oral and injectable treatments, such as corticosteroids, retinoids, non-steroidal medications, antihistamines and light therapy.  Dr. Goldberg may also work with you to identify triggers for your lichen planus to help you avoid future episodes.
