What is Nail Fungus?

Common in both fingernails and toes, toenail fungus is a dark living organism that develops in damp, dark environments. More commonly found on the feet, nail fungus has a yellow or brown coloration and can cause the nail to become brittle and break. Toenail fungus continues to grow because the nail provides a protective layer.

How Can I prevent Toenail Fungus?

  • Wear cotton socks and shoes that allow the foot to breathe
  • Apply an anti-fungal powder or spray every week
  • Groom your nails regularly – keep them clipped and short.
  • If you get a pedicure or manicure at a nail salon, make sure that the tools your technician is using are properly sterilized and the environment is hygienic.
  • Wear shoes when in public areas such as the pool, locker room or gym
  • Don't pick the skin around your nails. This could create an opening where bacteria can get in
