Question: My nails have a sort of yellowish, thick appearance. Is this nail fungus? How do I treat it? Answer: Yellow nails can commonly be caused by nail fungus. This appearance can be caused by chronic manicures and pedicures. If the nail is thick and yellow, it may be caused by a fungus. In general topical antifungal treatment does not work for this. Oral antifungal agents can improve the condition, but can also cause severe side effects. Recently the Nd:YAG laser has also been shown to clear some fungus infecti3ed nails without the side effects seen with pills.

Question: What’s the best way to clear up nail fungus? Answer: Nail fungus can sometimes respond to topical creams. More resistant nail fungus generally has required oral medications to clear. Unfortunately some people have serious reactions to this medication. A new laser has just received FDA approval for the treatment of toe nail fungus.
