Question:

I've heard many doctors have stopped offering microdermabrasion in favor of lasers. Is this valid?

Answer:

Microdermabrasion is generally used to treat wrinkles, acne scarring and acne. Because microdermabrasion treatments only remove superficial layers of skin, they are never as effective as lasers in the treatment of wrinkles and acne scars. However, microdermabrasion can be effective in cleaning out the blackheads and whiteheads of acne as well as temporarily tightening pores.

Question:

What is the difference between a chemical peel and microdermabrasion?

Answer:

A chemical peel involves the use of an acid (most commonly fruit acids such as glycolic acid) whereas microdermabrasion involves the use of an abrasive handpiece. Both are used to remove superficial layers of the skin. Most commonly chemical peels and microdermabrasion are used by estheticians to either freshen facial skin or to remove acne whiteheads and blackheads.
