Question:

Is it true that treatment of birthmarks works better when people are young?

Answer:

Portwine stain birthmarks respond best to treatment with the pulsed dye laser when babies born with them are treated at a very young age. We have treated babies as young as 2 weeks of age with this very safe laser.

Question:

I'm African American and I've had problems with acne on and off. Are there some things that work better for African American?

Answer:

The general approach to treating acne is the same no matter what your skin color. We use a variety of topical medications, peels and laser and laser like devices. Sometimes we also must use pills. There are some lasers that are safer for darker skin types.

Question:

What do you recommend to treat acne in teens? My daughter's 14 with very bad acne, but I worry about the safety of procedures like chemical peels and lasers at her age.

Answer:

Chemical peels and laser treatments may be very effective for some adolescents with acne where parents are trying to avoid having their children take prolonged antibiotics. The issue is not so much the safety of the peels and laser treatments. Recognizing that no treatment is risk-free, you greatly enhance both safety and efficacy by seeing experienced dermatologists for your daughter’s treatment.

Question:

How much pain is associated with treating a port wine stain? Is this something that is performed on children and how do they generally tolerate the treatment?

Answer:

We use the pulsed dye laser on young children with portwine stains. The earlier the children are treated, the better the results. We treat infants as young as 2 weeks of age.  At our center, pediatric anesthesiologists provide mask anesthesia. – an approach that is somewhat like a dentist using “laughing gas”. There are no needles involved.

Question:

I'm interested in undergoing ultherapy. How long after treatment will I see results? Will there be any visible results right away?

Answer:

Some patients see results right away from the Ultherapy treatment.  However, the results continue to improve for 3-6 months after treatment from this ultrasound based therapy. Although we most commonly use the treatment to tighten the jowls and neck, we have recently been able to perform buttock cheek lifting with Ultherapy.
