Question:

I'm interested in getting a facial peel and I'd like to know how this is different at a medical spa vs. just at my local salon?

Answer:

Medical grade peels are generally provided by highly trained medical individuals. Usually such peels are combined with appropriate products for your skin. Medical peels are safer and more effective than anything you will receive in a local spa.

Question:

Will a chemical peel improve stretch marks? I know lasers can be used but I'd like to avoid them. Chemical peels have never been shown to do much for stretch marks.

Laser treatments may not be perfect, but they are the best thing out there for stretch marks.

Question:

I'm interested in undergoing ultherapy. How long after treatment will I see results? Will there be any visible results right away?

Answer:

Some patients see results right away from the Ultherapy treatment.  However, the results continue to improve for 3-6 months after treatment from this ultrasound based therapy. Although we most commonly use the treatment to tighten the jowls and neck, we have recently been able to perform buttock cheek lifting with Ultherapy.

Can you explain what GentleWaves is? Is this a milder form of laser resurfacing?

Answer:

Gentle Waves is a brand name for one of several useful LED technologies. LEDs do play a role in improving skin quality. They are often used in conjunction with laser resurfacing. However, they are neither a replacement for laser resurfacing nor do they represent a milder form of laser resurfacing.

Question:

Is a photo facial the same thing as laser skin resurfacing?

Answer:

No. Photo facial is the use of an intense pulsed light (IPL). This is not a laser. IPL treatments are most useful for the treatment of skin redness and superficial sun damage. They are not helpful for wrinkles. Wrinkles are best treated with laser resurfacing. Well know brad names include Fraxel, eMatrix and ProFractional

Question:

How do the results of a facial peel compare to laser skin resurfacing?

Answer:

In general most peels performed today are done by estheticians. These are usually some kind of glycolic acid peel. They are done to improve skin brightness and can also unclog blackheads. The very aggressive peels that were done years ago by physicians for the treatment of wrinkles and acne scars have mostly been replaced by laser or laser-like procedures such as Fraxel, Profractional or e-Matrix. Laser procedures, in contrast to aggressive peels deliver more consistently good results and have a lower complication rate when performed correctly.
