Question:

My son has impetigo. How would he have gotten it and is it serious? How do we treat it?

Answer:

Because impetigo can be highly contagious, most children catch this from other children. Take your child to the dermatologist who will probably place him on oral antibiotics and topical antibiotics.

Question:

We recently found out that someone in my son's class has impetigo which we've heard is very contagious. I haven't seen anything suspicious on my son but my younger daughter who is not yet in school has a small rash that I'm worried about. Is it possible for my son to pass it to her without actually having it himself? What would the rash look like if it is impetigo?

Answer:

Impetigo is usually spread by direct skin to skin contact. Your son would need the characteristic scabbing rash to be in contact with your daughter’s skin for this to happen. If your son does not have the rash, it is unlikely that your daughter has “caught” her rash from him. Best to see your dermatologist to be certain.

Question:

My son was recently diagnosed with impetigo. Can you explain what this is? I was scared when I first heard this but then somebody told me it fairly common and benign.

Answer:

Impetigo is a bacterial infection of the skin. It most commonly occurs after an abrasion or scrape of the skin and can be contagious. Your son may have caught it from another child. The good news is that is usually very easy to treat with oral and topical antibiotics.
