Question:

My son was staying at a friend’s house and I believe he came home with a bunch of bed bug bites. What can I do to ease his itching and do I need to be concerned that we now have bed bugs in our home?

Answer:

Before you treat the itch see your dermatologist to learn what actually caused the bite. Check your home, particularly your son’s luggage, his clothes worn within his friend’s home as well as the beds, furniture and carpet edges.

Question:

I live in New York City and saw a recent show on tv about bed bugs and how they’re everywhere in the city. I thought it was absolutely disgusting that they actually suck your blood! Does this cause any sort permanent or otherwise serious damage?

Answer:

Bed bugs feed on human blood. Bed bugs harbor nearly 30 human pathogens but it is unknown whether these are transmitted to humans. It is known that bed bugs bites appear as an irritated rash with an itch that just won’t go away.

Question:

Everyone in Boston has been freaking out about bed bugs the past few years. How do you know if you have them?

Answer:

With a careful eye, if you are infested, you can find them in your living environment. Bed bugs typically nest in beds, furniture and carpet edges. You will likely not see them on your body because they are nocturnal and feed on humans at night. You, however, will see their bites on your body in the morning and these (usually red bites) will itch.
