Question:

I have always had horrible acne and now have horrible acne scars. I'm very pale with sensitive skin and I'd like to know if a chemical peel would be safe for me and if it would help with the acne and scars.

Answer:

A chemical peel, if done correctly, is safe and can be helpful. However, the typical glycolic acid peel will never be as effective as laser and laser-like resurfacing methods that include brand names like Fraxel, Profractional and e-Matrix.

Question:

I have mild but persistent acne that I'd like to do something about. My doctor recommended Accutane but I'm not sure that I want to take this since it is mild. Are there any other treatment options available?

Answer:

There are a whole variety of safer approaches if you wish to avoid taking oral medications. We use a variety of lasers and light sources to shrink the oil gland size and decrease the bacteria associated with acne.

Question:

I'm African American and I've had problems with acne on and off. Are there some things that work better for African American?

Answer:

The general approach to treating acne is the same no matter what your skin color. We use a variety of topical medications, peels and laser and laser like devices. Sometimes we also must use pills. There are some lasers that are safer for darker skin types.

Question:

What do you recommend to treat acne in teens? My daughter's 14 with very bad acne, but I worry about the safety of procedures like chemical peels and lasers at her age.

Answer:

Chemical peels and laser treatments may be very effective for some adolescents with acne where parents are trying to avoid having their children take prolonged antibiotics. The issue is not so much the safety of the peels and laser treatments. Recognizing that no treatment is risk-free, you greatly enhance both safety and efficacy by seeing experienced dermatologists for your daughter’s treatment.

I have really bad acne and I've recently read about Isolaz treatment. Is this better and more effective than taking accutane?

Answer:

Isolaz treatment is not meant as a replacement for Accutane. Isolaz is a very helpful adjunctive approach to improving acne in those who do not wish to take oral antibiotics.

I live in Hackensack and I recently heard of something called Isolaz. How does this work? Is this good if you have acne-prone skin?

Answer:

We have many ways to successfully improve acne without the use of antibiotics. Isolaz is a unique device in that it allows bacteria killing light to be combined with a suction approach that cleans out whiteheads and blackheads.

Question:

I have horrible acne that I'd like to get rid of. I'm African American so are there some treatments that would not be good for me?

Answer:

We have many ways of treating acne. These include the use of topical agents, oral medications, light peels as well as some laser and light treatments. Although it is true that some lasers cannot be sued in darker skin types, many of our current acne laser and light treatments are color blind. They can be safe and effective for you if performed correctly.
