Question: I'm a 24-year-old woman. I've had occasional small lumps in my groin area over the past few years. I've always chalked them up to being ingrown hairs or something else benign because they've always disappeared. However, I've now had one for over 2 months and it's gotten very large and tender. What could this possibly be and how can I treat it? Answer: This is probably a cyst – derived from a chronic ingrown hair. It is best to see a dermatologist for both evaluation and treatment. If it is a cyst, some cysts respond to local cortisone injections and antibiotics,others need to be surgically removed.
