Question:

Do the effects of Botox and Dysport injections differ?

Answer:

They are very similar and are similar to Xeomin --a third substance now also approved by the FDA. We sometimes choose between the 3 based on the patient and the location of their wrinkles.

Question:

Will a chemical peel improve stretch marks? I know lasers can be used but I'd like to avoid them. Chemical peels have never been shown to do much for stretch marks.

Answer:

Laser treatments may not be perfect, but they are the best thing out there for stretch marks.

Question:

My husband has what started off looking like a bad pimple on the side of his nose. He's had it for about three days and then it suddenly turned purple, almost like a blood blister except he swears he didn't touch it or try to pop it. Should we be concerned or will this likely go away on its own?

Answer:

If it lasts more than several weeks, he should see his dermatologist to be sure it is not a skin cancer.

Question:

I'm a 24-year-old woman. I've had occasional small lumps in my groin area over the past few years. I've always chalked them up to being ingrown hairs or something else benign because they've always disappeared. However, I've now had one for over 2 months and it's gotten very large and tender. What could this possibly be and how can I treat it?

Answer:

This is probably a cyst – derived from a chronic ingrown hair. It is best to see a dermatologist for both evaluation and treatment.  If it is a cyst, some cysts respond to local cortisone injections and antibiotics, others need to be surgically removed.

Question:

I've heard many doctors have stopped offering microdermabrasion in favor of lasers. Is this valid?

Answer:

Microdermabrasion is generally used to treat wrinkles, acne scarring and acne. Because microdermabrasion treatments only remove superficial layers of skin, they are never as effective as lasers in the treatment of wrinkles and acne scars. However, microdermabrasion can be effective in cleaning out the blackheads and whiteheads of acne as well as temporarily tightening pores.

Question:

Are professional skincare products better for rosacea than products you get at the drugstore or department store?

Answer:

Rosacea irritation and swelling is best treated with topical and oral physician prescribed medications. Rosacea related redness is best treated with a variety of lasers and light sources. Drugstore and department store rosacea products generally are ineffective in treating rosacea and in some situations may actually worsen the condition.

Question:

I recently heard of a vein treatment that uses radio frequency energy. Is this a good treatment?

Answer:

Radiofrequency treatment, much like laser and light source treatment, heats unwanted veins leading to improvement. However, in most situations, laser and light based technology is more effective for removing most unwanted veins.

Question:

I'm interested in undergoing ultherapy. How long after treatment will I see results? Will there be any visible results right away?

Answer:

Some patients see results right away from the Ultherapy treatment.  However, the results continue to improve for 3-6 months after treatment from this ultrasound based therapy. Although we most commonly use the treatment to tighten the jowls and neck, we have recently been able to perform buttock cheek lifting with Ultherapy.

Question:

Can you explain what GentleWaves is? Is this a milder form of laser resurfacing?

Answer:

Gentle Waves is a brand name for one of several useful LED technologies. LEDs do play a role in improving skin quality. They are often used in conjunction with laser resurfacing. However, they are neither a replacement for laser resurfacing nor do they represent a milder form of laser resurfacing.
